Project Overview

"There once was a big empty room in the Community Centre..."

Thus began in February 2009 a fascinating cooperation between Bloemekenswijk and Design museum Gent. Under the motto "Flora inspires!" the challenge was accepted to turn the empty Community Centre room into a floral oasis. Neighbourhood residents and pupils of the three neighbourhood schools set to work with great enthusiasm. Discussions were held with designer duo Weyers and Borms and slowly but surely the floral designs grew into a beautiful and diverse bouquet. Tablecloths and placemats, dishes, lighting fixtures and a playful kid's corner were created. The inspiration for this flowery abundance was found in the Design museum Gent: a vase with sunflowers, a bowl with poppies, a mirror and perfume bottles adorned with white lilies,... nature has often been a source of inspiration for designers.

"There once was a large empty room in the Community Centre..."

Thus began the tale. The colourful result was festively inaugurated on 26 september 2009!
