Fantasy Design in Community press conference was organised on the 3rd of June at Happi Youth Activity Centre in Helsinki. Leena Ruotsalainen, Division Director of Centralised Services (Youth Department, City of Helsinki) gave a warm welcoming address stressing the wide meanings and importance of participation in youth work. Graphic designer, creative director Pekka Piippo (Hahmo, Helsinki) talked about The Designer's Perspective on Fostering Participation. He claimed that a group of children could be professional critics of design and user experiences.
Urban planner and designer, Dr. Angela Uttke of Germany (Jugend Architektur Stadt JAS) gave an inspiring lecture with the title Participatory Design - Young Ideas for Spaces of Tomorrow showcasing concrete examples of projects where young people have designed and constructed their own environment. The Fantasy Design Projects in Finland, in the cities of Oulu, Lahti and Helsinki were presented by architect Eini Vasu ( Lintulampi School, Oulu / City of Oulu), rector and designer Eeva-Liisa Kauppila (TAIKA School of Art and Design) and architect, regional artist Jaana Räsänen (Arts Council of the Helsinki Metropolitan Region). Projects currently active in Belgium, Denmark and Spain were shown from the Fantasy Design Webpages by Design Museum Helsinki people, museum guide Hanna Kapanen and Educational Curator Leena Svinhufvud who also hosted the event.
